Yes! I wrote my letter -- but in a different sort of way! This is a fun little kit for Christmas and holiday photos. I was inspired by my grand daughter writing her letter to Santa. She spent a great deal of time looking through sale ads and magazines, carefully cutting out pictures of the toys she wanted -- it was just so cute! And she wrote Dear Santa for me, which I scanned for the kit.

It's all ready for you with 10 papers and 43 unique elements. Just take a look at what my talented Creative Ladies have done with it!

Tutorial Using Jodiann Cate's Styles -- Making Plaids

Ok, one of these days I really need to move my blog over to my design name -- Nana Pixels is me, JanetB Designs!

Jodiann is a total delight!! Wonderfully creative and just plain fun to talk to! As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been able to play with her latest 3 sets of styles, Jodiann's CU Christmas Stars, CU Christmas Shine and CU Christmas Stripes. I've linked to the front page of her store at DigiScrapWarehouse so you can see all three products at once.

Now on to the fun! If you look in my previous post, you 'll see the words Merry Christmas. That's actually done in a combination of her Christmas Stars and Christmas Shine. I use Photoshop CS5, and will show you some screenshots as we go along. Ready?

PART ONE

Merry Christmas -- using Christmas Stars and Christmas Shine -- is actually 5 layers:

Start with a transparent layer 12x12 inches at 300 dpi. Select your font (I'm using Tabitha) and type your words -- be sure to choose a font that has a bit of chunkiness to it. If it's not quite thick enough, try making it bold using the type palette on the character tab. I didn't use the same color in both sets of styles. Starting at the bottom and working up to the top layer:

1. Bottom layer is Shine "like a bow" at 20%
2. Layer 2 is Stars "like a bow," pattern scale is 25% and 100% opacity
3. Layer 3 is Stars "like a bow" at 67% opacity
4. Layer 4 is Stars "portly" at 67% opacity (yes, I used the slightly darker red color)
5. Top layer is Shine "like a bow" at 50% opacity (if this layer is more opaque there is more of a wet look but you lose the stars underneath. If you lower the opacity more you lose the look of the shine but you can see the stars better)

Here's the screenshot of the words at 100%. You can also see the type palette, circled in yellow, and my layers are labeled for you.

And here are the finished words you can see in the screenshot above. In the sample in my previous post, I used the color "portly" in both sets of styles.

PART TWO -- PLAIDS

Next we're going to use her delicious Christmas Stripes and make plaids!

In very basic terms, you start with a striped paper, duplicate it, turn it 90 degrees, and then reduce the opacity of the top layer -- it's magic!

1. Start with a 12x12 white layer on the bottom, click on whatever color stripe you would like.

2. Add another white layer and place your second stripe color. Place a transparent layer on top of this stripe layer, select both and merge, control-E.

Below, you can see my layers, bottom and top ones have the stripes applied but their effects are dangling, so you can't see them yet. (There's a reason for adding and merging the transparent layer -- you can't manipulate the stripe layer unless you do this. For instance, if as you're working you decide the color has faded and you need to adjust the saturation, it can't be done on the layer with it's effects hanging out -- it has to be a rasterized layer to do that. And you certainly can't do the step below if it's not merged! Go ahead and try to rotate the top layer without merging, you know you want to)

Did you see what happened when you tried to rotate the layer when it wasn't merged with the stripe layer? The layer rotated all right, but the stripes didn't!
Now you can see what happens with the two layers merged -- the stripes appear in the layers palette.

Now I'll add the transparent layer above my top layer and merge and we'll go on to the next step.

3. Go to edit > transform > rotate 90 degrees, then reduce the opacity on this layer to between 42-50% -- your plaid magically appears! So here it is, the gorgeous plaid, and you can see the the stripes and rotation in the layers palette. This has made a wonderful, very even regular plaid.

But what if I like an irregular plaid?

If you're still in the same file, you have two choices right now to do it.
1. The easiest way to do it from the point above is to click on the color layer you want to "stretch out," hold down the shift key to keep it in proportion, and drag the corner out till you're happy with the scale. -or-
2. Undo till you get to the point where you have one stripe layer and the transparent layer unmerged. Double click on the words pattern overlay in the list of effects for that layer, and when the box comes up change the scale to whatever looks good to you (I used 400%). Then merge the stripe and its transparent layer.

Can you see the difference in the scale now between the purple and the turquoise layers?

Now what if you want a different background color instead of the white in the pattern overlay? Ready to have a little more fun?

1. Turn off the visibility of one layer and then zoom way in. Make sure each layer is back to 100% opacity.
2. Take your magic wand tool and click on the white background. Marching ants will appear around those white stripes. Click backspace and they disappear. Zoom way in to have a look -- you might have to do it again with a tiny stripe next to a color stripe if the magic wand didn't get it. The blue arrow is pointing to what was missed. Turn the other layer back on, and repeat this process.

Add a layer at the very bottom, I selected a fill of a light yellow in this sample. Add a yummy texture of some sort and you have an awesome plaid!

Wasn't that fun?? By using the different colors and scaling each layer, you can have an endless variety of plaids -- with white backgrounds, and now with colored backgrounds!

Well actually she has made lots of them, and I have a bunch of them. Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the great privilege of playing with her collection of Christmas styles. They are brand new, come in 30 ( ! ) colors, a wonderful variety to play with on your pages -- and best of all they are ok for commercial use! (Be sure to read through her terms of use.)

Aren't they gorgeous? I made the "Merry Christmas" using both the Stars and the Shine styles. The Stars have some texture, little stars and a bit of music in the pattern. The Shine styles are really not like the glass or epoxy or acrylic styles you have used or seen. They have a wonderful, rich depth of color. I told Jodiann that this shade of red reminded me of the cherry jelly I made this summer.

And now how about these stripes? They are great as they are, but I made plaids with them!

Charity DVD -- The Artist Studio

This year Digidesignresort wants to make a difference – we want to give something back from all the love you give us through the year, and we want to give something to those who live in poverty, pain and danger – the Haitians. Although they have disappeared from the news they are still suffering from the results of the earthquakes this year. Some weeks ago Monja, our store owner, saw a report on TV and since that day she couldn't forget the eyes of a little girl who is now blind – waiting for help and surgery.

Although these appeals are usually mostly around Christmas – we at Digidesignresort not only want to help over Christmas but with this DVD, we can help over the whole year. We will send our donation to SOS Kinderdorf – a German Charity organization. It´s well known so I´m sure our money will be brought to those who need it most. If you like a look – check out here.

50% of ALL income will go to support SOS Kinderdorf's charity projects in Haiti. The other 50% will be used for shipping (because shipping is already included in the price of the DVD to make it also affordable for you), and material coasts (DVD, printing, cover printing). Some Updates

Well, my blog has been neglected because of long hours at work. But I've also spent a lot of hours in front of my laptop!

First the big news -- I'll be closing up my shop at DigiScrapsDriveIn on Nov 30. Everything is 35% off till I close my doors.

I'll go back to being exclusive at DigidesignResort -- and I just finished a kit that will be released Dec 1. (I used it for the ad below, just a little sneak peek of it) -- and I'm working on another collab kit as well.

Some other fabulous news -- starting December 1, there will be 24 days of video tutorials for scrappers! What a great Advent calendar! New Kits

I have seriously been busy! Not just at work, but here at my laptop! I have three kits to show you- can you believe it?

First is the beginning of a series of kits called Timeless. They will share a similar color palette and each kit can be used with the others. the first one is called Timeless, a bit of elegance, lace and florals. Timeless Modern has clean lines and is more monochromatic.

And finally the kit just released, definitely a little different than my usual style, but fun to make, it's Reach for the Stars. Speed Scrap for CT Appreciation Week, July 9 at 2 pm

Tomorrow is the day! Here's all the info you need:

It's one of the events for CT Appreciation Week!

It's July 9, at 2:00 pm eastern daylight time in the U.S. This means that those of you in Europe have the opportunity to participate! It will be a evening for you.

Here's a link to time converter -- it's set to where I live, you fill in the date and time, July 9 at 2:00 pm, and click Submit. On the next screen choose your country from the drop down menu, the screen will change and it will tell you what time it will be for you.

It's at DigidesignResort in the chatroom (the chat button is all the way to the right in the line of quick links at the top of the page.) You will have to register in the forum to participate, because the chatroom requires your forum login to enter. It also uses Java, so be sure to have that installed on your computer.

I Have Blinkies !

Ok, this may not seem like a big deal, after all it's not a kit or anything, but I am so excited about how gorgeous these are! In browsing the forum at DST, I discovered a lady, Michelle, who was going to make a free blinkie for the first three people who replied to her. I was number four, but that didn't matter because I wanted to have three of them made, so I intended to pay her. I just loved her fresh style, and the smooth movement in her animations.

So she decided to use elements and papers from my kit, Elegance, to make my blinkies. And I'm just so happy with what she created. If you need blinkies made, Michelle is someone you want to talk to. Here's her blog, Times 2 Design, with samples of her work! I can highly recommend her!

Charity Collab blog train and Freebie

DigiScrapsDriveIn is hosting the sale of this charity collab for a young lady named Jenna. Jenna received a liver transplant in 1997 when she was just 7 years old. The transplant was a success and her health had been good. She graduated from Apollo High School in the spring of 2009 and just finished her first successful semester of college at Bemidji State University. When she came home for Christmas break this December, she showed her parents 2 huge lumps on her body. Jenna was quickly admitted to the University of Minnesota Medical Center where their greatest fear became a reality and Jenna was diagnosed with Post Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder, a form of cancer caused by the anti-rejection medications she received following her transplant.

She is currently undergoing a rigorous chemotherapy treatment for the next 6 months. The increase in doctors appointments and primary goal of keeping Jenna healthy has prevented her from going back to Bemidji for spring semester. She is currently working at Cashwise Pharmacy when she feels up to it and is taking an online class through BSU. All money received will go to cover Jenna's medical expenses.

Some Updates and a Freebie

Poor neglected blog! March has been busy, celebrated my birthday, had some special family times.

Two ladies from DigidesignResort's awesome CT and I have been talking for months about getting together for lunch. Sharon lives close to me, and Elaine drives up into this area because she has grandbabies here (kids too, of course). So finally we settled on a day, and met at the Cheesecake Factory, and literally talked for hours! It was a nice day and we sat outside on a patio. So much fun -- and here we are!

I've spent February and March as a Guest CheeryO at Oscraps -- and that has been a blast! A year ago ( ! ) Oscraps had a "competition" for guest site CTs. I won a spot, and we were assigned a two month block, but I won the last block of months! So I thought I'd post a few of the layouts I've done during this time.

Help Haiti Collab kit

It's finally ready! And I'm really proud to have been able to contribute to this massive and totally amazing kit, Help Haiti !! The kit is priced at $8 and contains over 40 zips of product. A total of four designers from DDR contributed to it along with a large group of designers from everywhere around the world. Cyndi Wetmiller, Wetfish Designs, created the previews (an incredible undertaking by itself!) and here it is. It's available at several stores, and I've given you the link to Divine Digital. All the proceeds are going to Compassion International, a charity that has a very long history of helping the people of Haiti.

New Kit

I can't believe it has been over a month since I posted anything, but it's not for the lack of having something to show you!

I'll get to the kit in a minute, and when I tell you about our lovely snowy weather, you'll understand the why I chose the colors!

Feb 6 it started snowing, and kept snowing till we finally ended with a total of 32 inches! Hubby and I went out while it was still snowing to get started clearing our driveway. For each single width of a snow shovel, it took 5-6 scoops to get down to the driveway -- four hours later and exhausted, we went back into the house, having cleared only half the driveway and the area around the 4Runner so we could attempt getting out. I told hubby that his car, which is rear wheel drive, can stay buried till April -- I'm done with shoveling.

Then Feb 10, we got another 8 inches on top of what we already had -- which brings me to colors!

This new kit is called Fresh, and has rich spring colors with fun frames, flowers, stitching and lace.

DigidesignResort was hacked, and other stores experienced the same thing over the summer. I got word this morning that our programmer will have to stop working on ours (we're mostly back) to help fix new stores that were hacked!

I just do not understand the mentality of those who deliberately set out to destroy other people's hard work. Why can't they use that expertise and creativity in positive, productive, income-earning ways, instead of battering down those who are working hard to create jobs for others?!? I so wish there were a way to catch and punish them!

It's been awhile since I've posted, life has a way of taking interesting directions and off you go. I had a busy end of summer and the start of fall hasn't been any different. Started a new set of challenges for the month of October. Spent a week of vacation with the whole family in the hills overlooking the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Home again, caught up with work, made two scrapbooking kits, accepted at a store which opens this week.

Update, and new Challenge Host

Haven't written much lately except for instructions for the new September challenges for DigidesignResort. I'm now in charge of all the challenges there. And we have a new system! Well, an old system plus the new one.

If you do all six of the original challenges, you receive a code for the enormous monthly collab kit made by our designers. For September, it's called Indian Summer, and has the most delicious shades of browns, yellows, oranges and greens.

Oh, my goodness! The last month has been really busy! Spent some time traveling to California for a conference and then 4 days visiting my brother and his family. Had a great time.

Problem with being away from the office is that your desk gets buried. Sigh . . .

Tried a New Challenge

So I'm dabbling with designing, playing with all the menus in Photoshop. Who knew there were so many??

Anyway, I found this challenge over at GoDigitalScrapbooking.com called Pick Your Palette. What you do is this: you choose a photo and then select a palette of 5 colors from the image. I used a color palette generator online (you upload your image and a few seconds later you have about 15 colors to choose from -- it's awesome). Then you post your photo and swatch in the gallery and also in the thread. The woman in charge of the challenge PMs you with the kit pieces, all in gray scale, that you have to recolor to the shades in your swatch, and then make a layout with those pieces. Make sense?

Here's my layout. It's a photo taken while on a trip to Alaska. Mendenhall Glacier is in the back to the left dumping out into the lake of freezing cold water. This little clump of flowers, and I didn't see anything else like them around there, was calling me.

Lots of stuff happening! Julie Marie, Christie Lemmon and Steel City Scraps have worked on a summer time collab, and it has just the cutest things in it. It will be released this weekend. I'll post more later on this, but you're going to want to get it for all your summer fun, kid pics.

Steel City Scraps is opening at Scrappity-Doo-Dah -- her sale started Monday, and here's a deal for you -- Rachel says "if anyone posts my ad on their blog and then links me back in the comments of the steel city blog, I will enter them to win a $10 GC to my new shop. Drawing will be on Saturday when the sale is over!"

The finishing work is being done on a new collab at DigidesignResort and some of my items are going in it!! I'll post some freebies that go with it probably next week. Keep watching here for the announcement of its release. (hint: designs and supplies for artists) That's it, I'm not saying any more! Oh, and designers, each month a huge CU bag is also released -- and I've seen what it's in it! Oh, boy, you'll want it!
